Swimming is an incredible way to enjoy the outdoors during summer, and is one of the best all-over high-cardio yet low-impact sports around. Not only that, but being in the water is super relaxing.
I am a massive lover of rock pool swimming in particular; chlorine does nasty things to blonde hair, so I try to steer clear of that. Salt water on the other hand, has hugely healing properties for the skin. Ever noticed how your skin clears up during summer when you’re hitting the beach often? That’s the beauty of salt water. It does that for you. (That, along with probably the relaxation of spending time at the beach!). After swimming 1km in a rock pool, I feel super chilled and not only that, but fit all over. If you’ve never done it, you’re seriously missing out. It’s also a great way to mix up your workouts to reduce impact and chance of injury.
According to Registered Chiropractor Ashleigh Mundy of Shirley Road Chiropractic, swimming offers something no other aerobic exercise does: the ability to undertake a whole-body workout under low-impact conditions and as a result, protect your muscles and joints from unnecessary stress and strain.
“Whether it’s up to your knees or up to your neck, the water bears a considerable proportion of your body’s weight, making the odd paddle particularly beneficial for individuals recovering from injury or suffering from stiff and painful joints associated with arthritis.
“Movement of the entire body against the resistance of the water increases muscle tone and strength, burns kilojoules and enhances cardiovascular and respiratory endurance.”
In addition to this, according to Mundy, swimming is shown to have a large effect on stress relief, balance, coordination and posture. “It promotes correct breathing patterns, which in turn reduce strain on the muscles and joints of your neck and shoulders.”
